HEATHER GORDON CREMONESI (1939 – 2012)
Heather Gordon Cremonesi was very much the Renaissance woman. She trained at the London Film School and worked as a producer for Italian and Austrian television, and on a series of Oxford University Press films on World War I, as well as being Secretary of the Short Filmmakers Campaign. She was a pioneer in the field of women’s history and devoted ten years between 1972 and 1982 to the subject. During these years she created and edited a History of Women Series of books for Collins Fontana. Between 1974 and 198l she was Co-Managing Director of Gordon & Cremonesi Publishers, many of whose publications she commissioned and all of which she personally designed. Her publications included articles for the TLS, The Times, Telegraph, New Society; and she translated fiction and non-fiction from French, Spanish and Italian. She was a painter throughout her life, often exhibiting with the Hampstead Arts Council. She was included in a women’s collective exhibition at the Whitechapel Gallery in 1988. She devoted her later years to photography, and in 2002 she was represented in the category of photography at the Summer Exhibition at the Royal Academy.
